I've been finding these vintage Heller storage containers for a while. I love the colors and the fact that they are glass. They are easy to clean and hold a lot.

CHARLEY HARPER: A BIRD'S EYE VIEW

Earlier this morning, I walked up to the building where I took my design classes at the University of Cincinnati to check out the last day of "Charley Harper: A Bird's Eye View".

It was "a retrospective view of Charley Harper's career. Many never before seen works will be on view, beginning with his childhood and tracing a path throughout his career, providing a unique insight into the development of the icon maker we know today."

I loved seeing his process... there were many mock-ups/sketches with the finished piece next to it. I also enjoyed seeing his earlier works including paintings, pencil sketches of his time in Europe during WWII, and work by his wife.

These originals for Golden Books series were amazing to see in person. And the spot illustrations were great..

This was a wonderful exhibit that I was fortunate to see... and happy to see it at my alma mater.

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY

I went thrifting last Thursday and hit up about 10 stores. I found some good things as you can see in the post below. There were a few things that didn't come home with me...

I loved that brown chair but it was a bit expensive. Plus, it really doesn't go with the vintage bohemian vibe I have going on in my apartment.

The black chair was cool, but it was already sold.

That hutch was super cool, but it too was already sold.

I should have bought that cool bench, but it was in rough shape. Plus, I know myself... adding a bench to my home would only make me put too much stuff on it hoarder style.

What a groovy candle... with a gross layer of grime over it. I loved this mod cheese board/cutting tile but it was missing the knife. The owl trivet was fun, but was in rough shape.

I stopped at an antique mall and found this tulip table knock-off by Burke for only $250. I am thinking I really want to go back and get it. I don't have the room for it, but you know how that goes... I can make room.

UPDATE... I just bought the table! I will be picking it up in two days. Can't wait!

THRIFT SCORES

Over the past month or so I haven't had too many great thrifting trips. I've found a few decent things, but nothing really great to report.

Yesterday I decided to spend the day shopping. I visited around 10 thrifts and found some great stuff. Some were kinda pricey, but I was willing to pay the asking price.

I'm a sucker for kitschy wall-hangings. This cat and dog pair caught my eye right away. And the paint-by-numbers is in great condition and will do well in the shop.

I've found a few of the Polaroid one-step cameras with the rainbow stripe, but I've never kept one for myself. This one was kinda pricey, but I decided to splurge since I recently came across a pack of 600 film tucked away in a closet.

The two upside down light bulbs are actually salt and pepper shakers made in Japan. They were too cute to pass up and will be in the shop soon.

I collect white pottery and glass, and when I saw this hand/fist I immediately put it in my cart. I'm not quite sure what it is since it has a hole in the bottom as well as the top. I assume there is something missing. I dodn't care, I still like it.

And the ceramic glove mold was too cool to not buy.

I collect wooden candle holders, so when I saw this dove/bird piece I did a little happy dance. It looks like one of the "wings" is missing, but it's still cool.

I freaked out when I saw the Dansk Købenstyle carafe. It's something I've been looking for and it's in good condition. I will definitely use it instead of just putting it on a shelf and looking at it.

The Japanese apple canister will do will in the shop.

The splurge of the day was this piece of West German pottery. It was $28 which I thought was a good buy. If it had been white, I would have crapped my pants. But I still like red which will go well with my orange and red pottery.

I love anything with type... it's the graphic designer in me. So when I first found the "3 Liter" jar I did a little dance. Instead of putting it in the shop, I decided to keep it... and the collection started.

Most I have found thrifting. The "1 Liter" jar I found on Etsy. I'm hoping I can find a "2 Liter" jar and the "Sugar" jar to complete the two sets. I believe there is a set similar to the "Misc" jar, too.

I keep forgetting I have favorite listings on Etsy! I went through them today and thought I'd share some of the more impressive items, albeit out of my price range. The things I usually add to my Etsy favorites are items I'd love to come across while thrifting, but living in the Mid-West I usually don't see.

I'd probably never order furniture on Etsy because of the shipping costs. But if I found something I absolutely loved, I'd consider it.

This wall unit/room divider makes me swoon. AND it has a built-in desk. And I've been looking for a bookcase/hutch like this one for a while now.... lurve it!

I've been looking for a black Cathrineholm tea kettle for a while. I saw one on Ebay a month ago and should have bid on it since it sold for only $75. Anyway, anything Cathrineholm gets my attention, like this blue bowl. The Kaj Frank mushroom bowl would be an amazing thrift find, but I don't really want to spend over $100 for one.

This super rad 80s clock would be awesome next to my bed. And these wooden monkeys, although knock-offs, are too cute! This is another item I would love to have, but I really don't want to pay over $100 for one.

I've been collecting mod wooden candle holders for about a year. You don't see many of them in this part of the country; I mostly come across overly ornate ugly ones and not the minimal mod ones that I like.

Regardless, I've been able to find some good pieces at thrift stores. I like all the candle holders above, but have a fondness for the silhouette of the one on the far left. I also like the Danish looking pair second from the right.

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY :: LAMPS

I'm always looking for a good mid-century lamp. Especially one with a ceramic or wood base.

Mostly what I find is miles and miles of brass lamps, the occasional Irmi nursery rhyme lamp and the usual Wal-Mart made in China ugliness.

This totally hilarious owl lamp was ceramic and in decent condition. It maybe could be cool with a fresh coat of glossy white spray paint.

Irmi lamps usually sell well in the shop. This Jack and Jill version was in great condition, but was priced at something too high for a thrift store. It was, like, $30.

This cool ceramic lamp, which I don't need, has a nice mid-century shape.

I'm waiting for the day when I can buy ceiling/pendant lights like these two. I think the white mod one is IKEA, but it's still cool. The other has 1970s bar written all over it.

I found this little Japanese toy house a few weeks ago while thrifting. Not exactly sure what it is or its age. It kinda looks European. I was going to put it in the shop, but I couldn't resist keeping it... it's too cute and too mod.

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY :: CALIFORNIA EDITION

When I was in Los Angeles in October I did a bit of thrifting with J. I've been told by several freinds that thrifting is better in the valley as well as east in places like Riverside. So, we headed off to the valley then headed over to Arcadia. We hit a few junk shops and thrift shops.

We first stopped at an independent thrift shop where I found some vintage tea towels and a few other items that were too big to fit in a suitcase. I liked the ashtray above, but do people still buy ashtrays?

I also found this fun southwestern style lamp which would be cool in a vintage-y eclectic interior. And the flour and sugar containers that were just so so.

This paper silhouette was fun, but too big to take home. The only thing I bought at this store were some kitschy tea towels which are now in the shop.

Next, we found two junk shops next to some train tracks (aren't the junk places always near train tracks). I don't normally go to junk shops and I was a bit overwhelmed, but they are J's favorite kind of thrift store.

That Plycraft chair is great and was only $200. I couldn't fit it in my suitcase, so it had to stay. And check out the robot... Totally 80s!

I didn't really see anything else I liked at the two junk shops. I did end up buying this totally 80s rainbow tin and a fun Aries zodiac mug, which have already sold in the shop.

Finally, we headed over to Arcadia because J's favorite sushi restaurant is there. After filling ourselves with all-you-can-eat sushi, we hit some Goodwills. They didn't result in really much of anything... nothing really even worthy of a photo.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed with thrifting in SoCal. Granted, I only went to a few shops. But the ones we did go to were very picked over. I was hoping to find some great pottery or some awesome wooden candlesticks... something that's mod. It seems like all of you that live and thrift in SoCal get lucky and find all that cool MCM stuff that I never find in the Mid-West.

Hopefully, when I am back in LA in the spring, I can try out some other locations and find some great stuff.

One of my goals for the blog is to add a few personal posts from time to time. I thought I'd share some photos of my trip to the zoo yesterday...

I love lemurs, but this Coquerel’s Sifaka was just as cute hopping from tree to tree. The mother and baby Bonobo were crazy cute. The baby came up to the glass and looked at us with the cutest darkest biggest eyes. It was totally amazing.

Lots of animals had babies, like these Gibbons. My opinion of zoos aren't that favorable, but at least these captive animals can reproduce.

J. was in town from LA visiting for the week. I had him pose next to the gorilla statue since I always call him my "gorilla." I love this photo of him... very cute!

Well, hello, there. After a 3 1/2 month break, I am back! I was very busy during the autumn doing lots of things... teaching, working part time for my old employer, having great sales with the shop, and taking web design classes. I've finally been able to come back up for air.

I didn't do too much thrifting over the past few months. When I was able to find some time I didn't find much anyway. It seems as if no one is donating and the pickins are slim. Many items aren't what I am looking for or just not good enough to buy...

These stools all seem a bit too 50s/60s for me. The stool on the right is the most mod. I love the simple legs.

That green upholstered chair could be great in the right interior. I'd probably reupholster it. The wood Danish chairs would also be great around a Saarinen white tulip table, or that knock off version by IKEA (which I really want). The orange chair is fun, but looks too much like a bath chair and not enough like an Eames. BTdubs, did everyone see the American Masters Eames episode?

I have a soft spot in my heart for the wicker chairs in the middle since my parents had these when I was growing up. I remember rocking in the them at the dinner table and driving my dad nuts.

I love the chair on the far right... It'd be great if the cushion was reupholstered in cream or light gray then covered with a sheep skin from IKEA. Oh, and I really want a cow hide rug from IKEA... does that make me bad?

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY :: ODDS 'N ENDS

It's another installment of What I Didn't Buy! This time it's odd and ends...

This Dansk pitcher got my attention, but it was in rough shape. Does anyone know if it should have a lid? I've been looking for a record player, but I don't think this Fisher-Price version would cut it. I'd love to find one of those elementary school record players with the speakers built in.

I've seen plenty of containers for coffee, tea, sugar and flour. But never one for grease. Eww, gross. I stood and looked at this owl-shaped jar for about 5 minutes. I finally decided to buy it since it is so unique. I knew I made the right decision because everyone in the thrift store was stopping me and asking about it.

I would have bought this piece of yarn art, but it was kinda big for the shop. Plus, I don't know, it just didn't excite me that much. And the peacock string art was great, but was in rough shape.

I kinda regret not buying the Last Supper paint-by-numbers. It was pretty expensive to put in the shop. Plus it was kinda big. I should have bought it. Oh well.

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY :: CHAIRS

Hello, everyone. I am back after a 3 week hiatus. I've been busy with other things in my life, including band camp with the high school group that I teach (yes, you read that correctly... BAND camp). I also had an out-of-town guest who happens to be from LA (more on this later).

I have been able to do quite a bit of thrifting, though. I didn't find too many amazing things that I actually purchased, but I did find lots of items caught my eye but that I left.

I love vintage chairs- they are the first items in the furniture departments that I notice. I like them because they are inexpensive, easy to take home and can add some funky character to any interior. Here are a few I liked but decided to not buy...

I really loved this Danish Modern looking armchair. However, it was in poor shape. There was a rip in the vinyl upholstery and the wood was nicked and scraped.

If I had an actual house with a back yard (instead of an apartment) I would have totally bought this great rocking lawn chair. Can you imagine sitting on this chair on a breezy cool summer evening with a glass of wine? AWESOME!

And I am a sucker for orange, silver and plastic. If I didn't already have too many plastic/fiberglass chairs, these orange beauties would have come home with me.

Speaking of silver, check out this pair of chrome awesomeness. There were six of the chairs on the right... totally easy to reupholster... can you imagine them in a black vinyl sitting around a Saarinen tulip table... wow!

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY :: KENTUCKY EDITION

For those of you who don't know, Cincinnati is on the Ohio/Kentucky border. The southern suburbs are in Kentucky. So the other day I decided to head down south and check out seven thrift stores in the Bluegrass State.

The thrift gods weren't with me... I only found one item in all the seven stores where I stopped (perhaps I used up all my thrifting karma a few weeks ago). I also stopped at a thrift store back in Ohio closer to my place and found a few more items. But this post is about all the stuff I didn't buy, so let's not get sidetracked...

KY schools start earlier than most... in fact some of my teacher friends start teaching this week. So these Thermoses got my attention right when I walked in the door of this shop. Thermoses never sell well in the shop, and I've never really been a fan myself. So they stayed put.

Another school-like object, these tiny file drawers were a nice stand-out. I'm pretty sure they held 8.5 x 11 sized paper. They'd be great for a home office or studio.

I always come across a lot of religious art in the area... it's the Mid-West, after all. This kitschy Last Supper made out of crushed plastic pieces stood out. But its size would make it awkward to ship. And the crewel flowers were nice, but it didn't scream at me to take it home.

The pepper mills were also cool, but they just didn't have that je ne sais quoi. The bird was cool, too. It was signed by someone in Peru. But, same as the pepper mills, it just didn't speak to me.

These lamps were interesting. I almost bought one of the desk lamps. The other one didn't work. I had just bought a great lamp at the place where I stopped right before this shop or else I would have bought it.

GIANT VINTAGE CLIPS

A few weeks ago while thrifting I found the giant black clothes pin above. It's not vintage, but I couldn't resist its charm. I also recently sold a brass giant paper clip in the Kitsch Café shop, then found another one last week. I'm thinking maybe I should keep it and officially start a "giant office supplies" collection... hmmm...

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY

It's another installment of "What I Didn't Buy." You all seemed to really like the last time I wrote about everything I didn't buy while thrifting. So, I thought I'd do it again. Enjoy...

I am not sure these two chairs were vintage or just retro. The blue one looks vintage because of the wear and style of the legs/base. The orange one looks more like IKEA. But they were both made by some company in Nashville... I didn't recognize the name.

These mirrors with yellow flower patterns were pretty cool. But they aren't exactly my style and I don't want to worry about shipping them if I sold them in the shop. And that black velvet painting was too creepy not to take a photo.

I do want a new mid-century desk, but this one wasn't going to cut it. I like the side table but this one is too much of a look. And that Danish modern inspired folding chair actually made it in to my cart and is now sitting in my living room. Hey, it was half off day and I couldn't resist for only $5.

The 1980s are back so anything from that era gets my attention. I loved the "Kid-Corder" but it was in rough shape. And does anyone still use cassette tapes, even in an ironic hipster way? I have a similar "Jetbag" but this one was in poor condition. Too bad because it was pretty cool. In my dreams I find one in great shape in gray or black.

Once again... furniture that's awesome but that I didn't want to buy because 1) it needs work and 2) extra furniture right now isn't the best idea for me. That silver side table is too cool, though.

THRIFT ROUND-UP :: SATURDAY SURPRISES

I wasn't planning on going thrifting last weekend. But on Friday night, I decided it would be a fun distraction from the heat wave that's been rolling across the US. Plus, I don't have air conditioning, so anything to get out of the heat and in to cooler air is awesome.

Well, I am glad I went shopping because I found a lot of great items. The thrift gods were definitely watching out for me! (which, of course, means my next few thrifting trips will be busts.)

This blanket with southwestern graphic pattern was calling my name. And I love this children's bed sheet with animal illustrations. It almost looks like it could be Marimekko. And it's not IKEA. Does anyone have any info they could share?

I've started collecting wooden mid-century candle holders. I've been looking for a pair like the ones above for some time. And the mod black granny glasses I couldn't pass up.

I love vintage embroidery so when I saw the Native American inspired piece above I grabbed it immediately. You usually only see floral patterns in vintage embroidery so this piece is unique. There is no explanation on the back so I'm curious what this pattern means.

And here is the best find of the day... and maybe even the entire year... two Cathrineholm pots! Major score! When I saw the larger pot I gasped, grabbed my pearls like a 1950s housewife, and ran down the shopping aisle. Everybody looked at me. I couldn't believe it. When I rounded the corner and started going down the next aisle I spotted the smaller piece which seemed too good to be true.

There were other items I found but these were the best of the bunch. What have all of you found recently?

MID-CENTURY ARCHITECT JOHN LAUTNER

Mid-Century architect John Lautner would have been 100 last weekend. To Celebrate, the Lautner Foundation is hold several events between now and November including tours of some of his more famous homes.

You may already know some of his work, such as the Chemosphere house in the Hollywood Hills (show above). More photos here.

Many of his Southern California homes were used in movies, including several James Bond movies and The Big Lebowski. Check out the clips below...

INTERVIEW :: BRINI MAXWELL

I'm so excited to share with you this short interview with the fabulous vintage-loving hostess, Brini Maxwell! I spoke with Brini about thrifting in New York, her love of vintage and what inspires her. For more on Brini, check out her website and blog. Thanks, Brini!

Tell us about yourself!
Well, I've been described as a "prototypical, pre-feminist 1960's homemaker" and that description fits, though I have been known to champion women's rights in a very feminist way from time to time. I'm all about hospitality and gracious living. I like creating a lovely environment and atmosphere for friends and loved ones and a big part of that has to do with thrifting.

You describe yourself as "part Donna Reed, part Mary Tyler Moore". Who is another fabulous gal from the mid 20th century we should all know about and why?
Actually, that's how the Style network described me when I was doing my show. I prefer to be described as one part Doris Day, one part Mary Tyler Moore and one part Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White's character on MTM). Among those, many yung-uns may not know much about Doris Day. She was America's sweetheart in the 50's and 60's - a very popular actress (the top female box-office draw in the 60's) and in later years an animal rights activist. She's exemplified by a warm, natural style of acting that made her seem like someone you'd want to have coffee with. On top of that, she was an incredible clothes horse, wearing the most beautiful styles in all her films and her subsequent television show in the late 60's and early 70's.

What draws you to vintage housewares and furniture? What's your vintage style and why?
I think vintage items are a treat for the eye. Aside from the fact that they were designed at a time when industrial and interior design was at a peak in America and abroad, they have a novelty in that they are familiar but forgotten aspects of daily life from our past. The environments I create have not only the now-ubiquitous furniture from the era, but also the ephemera - telephones, color-stories, appliances, publications. I take great care in assembling these environments to reflect a particular year.

Currently I'm in the process of renovating my Chelsea, NY apartment in an early 70's style with touches of chinoiserie and Hollywood regency. I'm mixing modern and traditional furnishings and accessories and redoing the kitchen with vintage appliances, including a Frigidaire Flair stove. I've just found vintage NOS tile that I'll be using on the floor and backsplash through RetroRenovation.com, a site run by my friend Pam.

For those of us living in the fly-over states, tell us about thrifting and vintage shopping in New York!
New York is an interesting market for thrifting. Most people think it's thrifted out, but if you have a sharp eye you can still find some fun bargains, even in the heart of the city. There's an enormous Salvation Army plant store on 46th St that is on two levels and they usually have something unusual. I also love to go out to Long Island, up to Westchester and out to New Jersey to look for things. There are so many great communities that have little thrift shops that are chock full of great vintage items that they locals don't understand the value of.

One of my very favorite shops recently closed. It was run by a synagogue that used to house a school on the south shore of Long Island and was actually in the gym. There were tables spread with treasures and ephemera that had been untouched since they had first been put out years ago. New stuff was constantly being added. There was always something to buy there.

What are your three best thrifting tips?
Train your eye :: It's important to know what you're looking at and what you're looking for. I've become so good at going through clothing racks that all I need to do is walk down the asile and look closely while running my hands along the clothing on the rack and I can spot vintage by the appearance and feel of the fabric.

Go regularly :: Turnover is constant at these shops and you never know when that item you're looking for will be put out on the floor.

Have a positive attitude :: More than once I've gone to a thrift shop with an intention to find a very specific item - I needed a vintage ice crusher and I set out to find one. I went to one store and knew it would be there. It was. Another time I wanted a specific book. I was able to find it in another store on the very first try. Whether you're looking for something specific or just some wonderful finds, knowing you'll be successful before you leave the house is a great mindset to have. You attract the good stuff to you that way.

WHAT I DIDN'T BUY

I love seeing what people buy when they go thrifting. Their excitement about their great finds and bargains. But what about those items that people almost buy? Those items that are great, but that you really don't need or it just doesn't make you that excited. So, while I was thrifting today I decided to take photos of items that caught my eye but I didn't buy for various reasons...

I found a set of five Melplus blue trays but decided to pass on them because blue isn't really a color I like nor have in my home. I could have sold them in the shop, but they would have cost too much and I didn't think there would be enough profit.

These super fab Olympics posters from 1980 got my attention. There were also two others that I didn't photograph. I liked them but didn't love them. I didn't like the Levi's logo on the bottom right. They were also too pricey to put in the shop. (Interesting trivia... the US did not participate in the 1980 summer games because it was held in Moscow).

Once again, I like these fun bird figurines, but didn't love them. The owl bank was kinda pricey and had some chips. Plus, I think the owl craze is long over, so I wasn't interested in putting it in the shop.

I love these fun kitschy candle holders but I passed on them for my personal collection because I don't get too excited about Christmas decorations anymore. Also, Christmas items don't sell well in the shop plus I am trying to get away from selling super kitschy items. The lamp is great, too, but it was chipped in a few spots. For the shop I don't want to deal with shipping large items.

More awesome furniture! This coffee table and dresser are great but I have too much furniture as it is. In the spring I am going to have to get rid of 2/3 to 3/4 of my stuff (for reasons I will go in to later) so adding more stuff to my apartment is kinda stupid right now.

Ok, I know that sofa table thingy is quite a "look". And I'm not a gold/brass kind of person. But it could be awesome in the right setting and something an experienced interior designer could work with (like in this space). And the wooden side table could be great with some elbow grease that I'm not willing nor have the desire to do right now in my life.

I've been looking for a hutch similar to this one, but I'm not going to buy something that's not exactly what I want. Plus this one had a matching sideboard and I didn't want to deal with that. And I am always a sucker for industrial looking chairs. But, like I wrote above, buying more furniture right now isn't an option.

What items have all of you found but not bought? What are some of the reasons you will not purchase an item?

I'm very excited to share a short interview with the amazing Kristina and Jason of the fabulous illustration studio INALUXE. If you aren't familiar with their work you will soon be obsessed after seeing their work below. Their über modtastic illustration work has been featured in magazines such as Real Living and Uppercase. Most recently they were invited to be a part of the Artists Portfolio of Prints, and the Year of Colour created by Kate Spade. Enjoy the interview!

Your work has such a mid-century modern feel. Was this a happy accident or did you set out to create this look?
It was all purely by accident - a 'happy accident' as you say. I've always loved bold graphic patterns, and colour. My influences come more from artists like Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko than say mid century design or illustration. I've always been a little partial to Japanese art too - the space and composition of the work has appealed to me since the age of 10. Funny how we carry these things with us, and they are life changing in our art.

Where do you find your inspiration for your illustrations?
It's hard to say. It might be the texture on a brick wall, or the softness of an old wooden floor. Maybe it's a textile weave, such as linen. With regard to shapes - that really just happens when I get the paint brushes and paint out. It's very much a journey, not so much a specific destination. It's a process of elimination alot of the time. Ten designs might get filtered down to one finished design. But there's no guarantee!

Does your home also have a Mid-century modern feel to it?
Our home is a mish-mash of all eras. It's more of an eclectic mix of objects and furniture from the early 1900s to today. We have broad taste in terms of what appeals, and can't really seem to settle on one era or style. Sometimes it's awkward trying to make it all work, and fit into an interior space, but we get there. I think buying an object you love is just so natural - regardless of style. Having said that, we do own several mid century pieces that we just love.

Do you like being surrounded by vintage items?
Most definately! There's that wonderful history in a vintage piece. And on an aesthetic level they are just so beautiful, for so many reasons. The term "they just don't make 'em like this anymore..." comes up a lot.

Do you like thrifting?
Love it. I love looking for everything from furniture, home decor to fashion accessories. Jason always heads over to the books, and records. It's not often we come home empty handed.

What are some of your favorite things to collect?
I'm going through a ceramic porcelain phase at the moment. I don't collect any particular style, or designer - it's purely visual appeal for me, and the mix is diverse. It might be the colour, pattern, or the shape that draws me in. The only criteria is that they are small - sugar bowls, sake cups, tea cups, etc. Aside from this, it's anything goes, but I do love vintage fabric, particularly linen for its crispness.

Jason's record collection is varied, but usually he cherry picks the easy listening and country records one usually finds discarded at thrift stores. Books gerenally include older copies of literary classics - ie: anything by Arthur Conan Doyle, Jane Austen, and even Ian Flemming - how can you go past James Bond 007!

And we both love old reference books. ACES!

TEMPORARY WALLPAPER

I've always rented and never owned. So I've never really had the option of painting my walls or putting up wallpaper. I don't mind white walls, but sometimes it'd be nice to mix things up, ya know?

I just came across these cool retro self-adhesive vinyl wallpapers by Tempaper. It was created with renters in mind; it's temporary and repositionable. It can be applied to any primed and painted surface, like walls, doors, interiors, tiles, mirrors, etc. Cool!

It's very retro and vintage inspired. Here are a few of my favorites from their collection...

THRIFT ROUND-UP :: JULY 4TH WEEKEND

Whenever I travel regionally, I usually make it a point to carve out some time to thrift. Last holiday weekend, on the way to and from my parents, I stopped at about eight Dayton-area thrift stores. Here are some of the better items I found...

Check out this great floor lamp. I love its modness. There is no label or mark. It was kinda expensive at $25, but I felt it was worth it. It reminds me of those fold-up music stands you used to practice your band instrument at home. I'm not sure if I will keep it or put it in the shop.

These four black candle holders are a mystery. They look alike at first glance, but there are actually two sets of two. One set has the original price tag on the bottom that reads, "Oaxaca $6.00" and the second pair has a price tag that reads "Sanborns $150.00"... Yikes! So are these some kind of fancy mid-century modern candle holders or are they tourist trinkets from Mexico?

I found these great plates by Berggren and almost passed because I thought they weren't vintage. iPhone to the rescue... I looked it up and found they are indeed vintage. And I couldn't pass on these two great coffee mugs.

I have a fondness for items covered in type... especially when they are mod. So the in/out file box and the "salad" bowl came home with me. They'll make great additions to the shop.

Everyone loves paint-by-numbers, so these three made the cut. I like the European seaside setting of the large piece and the two smaller ones are a nice pair.

I found a lot of other great stuff, but these are the items I wanted to share with you. What have all of you thrifted recently?

INSPIRED SPACES :: CHERNER CHAIR

Ahhh, the Cherner chair. That amazing piece of mid-century awesomeness that's as rare as it is expensive... a new one is $1000 so I can't even image what a vintage one would cost.

The chair was designed in 1958 by Norman Cherner. After many requests to reissue the chair, in 1999 his sons started the Cherner Chair Company making reproductions. The chairs come in a variety of styles: with or without arm rests, with or without upholstery, different stains and colors, etc.

For this version of Inspired Spaces, I responded strongly to the room above when I saw the Cherner chair and the subtle nautical theme. Enjoy...

VINTAGE COLLECTIONS WITH LISA CONGDON

I am very excited to share a short interview I just did with the fabulous Lisa Congdon. She recently authored a book entitled Collection a Day based on her year-long project and blog of the same name. I thought she'd be the perfect person to ask about starting a collection of vintage objects. Enjoy...

Why did you start your collections of vintage objects? where did/do you find them?
I started collecting when I was a kid. In the introduction to my book, I tell a story about how my mom started most of my collections for me. Dolls, plastic horses, etc. I wasn't necessarily collecting vintage items back then (though some of my dolls were antique), but I definitely got the "collector's bug". Plus I think I'm hard wired as a collector. No matter how hard I try not to collect, I can't help myself!

I started collecting vintage stuff about 18 years ago. I was in a relationship with another woman who was obsessed with collecting. She introduced me to the flea market and it was all over. From there I became obsessed with antique malls and garage sales too. I still go to mostly flea markets and antique malls (especially when I am traveling) and I do go occasionally to thrift stores. We have great thrifting in San Francisco.

What are your three favorite collections?
My favorite collections are:
:: my vintage mid-century Scandinavian + Japanese kitchenware collection
:: my vintage school supply collection
:: my tiny vintage portrait collection (I collect tiny tiny vintage photos -- mostly snapshots of people's faces)

How and where do you store your collections?
Some of my collections are on display in my home and studio. They are a combination of my favorite collections and a few that are just easy to display or are really decorative. I have some arranged in shadowboxes in my studio which hang on the wall. In my apartment I keep lots of things on shelves and on my credenza, usually grouped together. Like, all my orange pottery is grouped together on one shelf in my living room. My enamelware collection is housed in my kitchen (of course!), along with my plate collection. Little collections are scattered in spots throughout the house. Collections that I don't use for display are stored in my studio in bins, boxes and flat files. I'm pretty organized around my collections. I take really good care of them, which is important. They are often really fragile or susceptible to damage from heat, moisture or sun light.

What advice would you give someone beginning a collection of vintage items?
I have three main bits of advice:
1 :: Find a few collections that really resonate for you. Choose to collect a few things that you really love. I think it's important to collect stuff that's sort of challenging to find. If what you collect is easily available in every antique mall or flea market, it might be fun for about a month--but you will get bored easily. Collect stuff that is unique. Part of the fun of collecting is the "hunt".
2 :: Take good care of your collections. Vintage items are really special, and I think collectors are stewards of the past in a way. Plus, if you ever want to sell your collections (or parts of them), the better condition they are in, the better. If you have a particular collection, research how to take care of the pieces. If you collect vintage kitchenware, for example, it's probably best not to use the pieces that are the most fragile or could easily be damaged--except maybe on a special occasion. Don't put vintage things in the dishwasher or washing machine. Don't use harsh chemicals to clean them. Use common sense.
3 :: Try to find stuff that is priced reasonably. Don't get sucked into spending a lot of money on vintage collections on Ebay and other high end antique stores. If you don't feel comfortable with the price, don't buy it!! Part of the joy of collecting is finding that perfect item at $3 -- especially when you love it and it might even be worth $50!

BARBIE :: A MID-CENTURY ICON

I'm happy to share with you the following interview with my friend Scott. He collects and sells vintage Barbies, many at high prices on Ebay. I wanted to know more about this Mad Men-like mid-century icon, so I asked him some questions and he was more than willing to share his knowledge. Thanks, Scott!

Why collect vintage barbies? What makes collectors excited?
Although Mattel does "swell" reproductions of their 1960's dolls and outfits, they are of somewhat cheaper construction than their vintage counterparts, which were made from a higher grade vinyl (solid vinyl on the earlier dolls which had a porous waxiness to it that not only gave it a pleasant crayon-ish aroma but a more porcelain or waxy look and a heaviness to them, all of which combine to form a more "substantial" feeling than the hollow contemporary ones, which look and feel more like plastic.)

Also, the new dolls are all identical, whereas vintage dolls can vary greatly from one to the next... different facepaint stencils, variations in the head molds (some faces being long and narrow, others shorter and wider). Some vintage dolls were even hand painted or partially hand painted, making each one unique and different unto itself, appealing to the "art collector" side of vintage Barbie lovers.

Finally, the fact that each vintage doll is an actual artifact from the 1960's, which is important to people who came to vintage Barbie through a larger interest in the area that produced them.

Where do you find your vintage barbies? Is it possible to still find them in thrift/junk shops?
They don't appear very often in thrift stores due to media coverage over the years that has made everyone with a vintage Barbie think their doll is worth $1,000. Typically, thrift shop and pawn shop owners tell me that when they come across old Barbie dolls, they put them on ebay, not out in their stores. Of course, now and then you will find the occasional exception. Often the mod era dolls (1967-1970) will wind up in thrift stores and pawn shops because the owners don't recognize them as vintage dolls (the mod dolls featured a different facemold and these dolls are not typically the ones pictures in articles about vintage).

What condition to collectors expect? Is there a checklist you can suggest for someone evaluating the condition of a vintage barbie?
Basically, any vintage Barbie will sell on ebay. The question is, what differentiates a $20 doll from a $1,000 doll? Well, condition and rarity, mostly. Only the mint dolls (with no rubs or restoration to the facepaint, and hair in the original factory set and style, no body problems like missing fingers or bent legs, tanning of vinyl, green ear syndrome from the metal ear rings) are really valuable. If you find a vintage doll with any or all of the problems listed above, you are likely looking at a $20 doll in terms of Ebay value.

Where rarity is concerned, research is needed. Some types of dolls (like Bubble Cuts and Fashion Queens) are in much readier supply and easier to find in mint condition than the earlier Ponytails, for example, making them a lot less valuable. I would suggest anyone seriously interested buy a reference book and brush up, as there are so many variables that decide value.

Lastly, when checking to make sure a doll is vintage, look for patent dates of either 1958, 1962, or 1965 on the rear ends of the dolls. They should also say "Made in Japan" under the date. Avoid dolls with the 1966 butt stamp. That is a year of patent and not manufacture, and dolls with that year stamp are usually from the 80s or newer.

ROBIN AND LUCIENNE DAY

Robin and Lucienne Day were post WWII mid-century British designers. Robin designed inexpensive furniture using inexpensive materials and Lucienne designed textiles for companies such as Heals.

The couple is often compared to Charles and Ray Eames. However, the Eames tended to work as a team and the Days mostly worked mostly independently. Robin’s furniture and Lucienne’s furnishings are very similar and harmonious. However, the Days are both influential figures in their own right.

As I am doing more and more quilting, I especially love Lucienne's textiles. They are very mid-century to me, yet the patterns and color palettes are timeless.

I'm loving some gray mixed with black! Anything gingham is classic. The "script Ohio" tshirt has lots of meaning to me. I'm always looking for a nice pair of slim fit black trousers and matching blazer. Those tennies are amazing. And I have too many scarves, but another one wouldn't hurt!

GEORGE NELSON

I'm currently loving anything designed by George Nelson. I mean, look at this stuff! It's awesomely timeless...

Originally trained as an architect, Nelson became a writer after graduating from Yale, writing for publications such as "Pencil Points and "Architectural Forum". He also wrote a book entitled "Tomorrow's House" introducing the concept of the family room and storage wall. The book got the attention of Herman Miller's president who asked Nelson to become the company's design director.

Even though he had no design experience, Miller was asked to design his own items for the company. However, he fell in to it easily because of his architecture background.

Because of his connections to the design world, Nelson was able to bring designers to collaborate with Herman Miller, including Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi. This was a new idea at the time and helped establish Herman Miller as a leader in the industry.

It's Tuesday... which means another installment of INSPIRED SPACES! This week's space is one that I've adored since seeing this photo probably over a year ago. I never could find the source of the photo until recently...

It's a loft in NYC's Chelsea, home to a photographer. I love the mix of woods with metal with natural elements. I also love the subdued and restrained color palette. Check out more of the loft at Loft Life.

I have to say it was kinda difficult putting together this week's Inspired Spaces. But, I think it came together nicely and for less money than I imagined it would take to get the look above. Enjoy...

THE CITROËN DS

I'm really not a car person. But there are a few vintage cars that get my blood flowing and one of them is the Citroën DS.

The DS was manufactured between 1955 and 1975. It was designed by Italian industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni and is known for its futuristic body. The price tag for the DS was relatively high for the average Frenchman in post WWII, so a cheaper submodel was introduced in 1957 called the ID.

The DS was a hit in Europe, but it was a bit radical and odd for American tastes. Once imported, the price tag was similar to a Cadillac and other luxury cars of the era. However, the DS didn't have what Americans of the time considered luxurious, such as air conditioning, power windows, automatic transmission, etc. Also, the basic look of the DS didn't change from year to year, which Americans tended to see as stale. Only 38,000 were sold in the US between 1956 and 1972.

Wouldn't it be great to have one of these today! They're so cool and trés French! Expect to pay $3,200 for a fixer upper to $24,000+ for restored model... not bad!

FASHION TREND :: CANVAS TOTE BAGS

When I was in NYC a few weeks ago, I noticed a lot of men carrying canvas tote bags. I snucked (is that a word?) a photo of this guy using a cool 80s inspired splattered paint bag from H&M. I also grabbed a photo of a few bags hanging at Topman. Canvas tote bags have been around for years, but this is the first time I have seen men using them as a fashion accessory.

About two months ago, while digging around in a large bin at a Goodwill outlet, I found this cool vintage Hawaii souvenir bag for 25¢... yes, 25 cents! It was in rough shape but I threw it in the washer and it came out like-new.

There are lots of great canvas bags out there. A quick search on Etsy came back with a ton of results. Check out some of these cool bags I found:

WHAT I'M WEARING :: STRIPES

Holly over at Decor8 Blog is having a virtual "stripemania" party. I thought I'd join in since stripes are one of my "things."

The tshirt I got in NYC at one of my favorite shops, Muji. I bought another one in different shades of gray since I like it so much. The gray shirt is linen that I have had for years. I haven't worn it much but have recently rediscovered it and I think it will go in to regular wardrobe rotation. The trousers are from H&M and are also linen. They are surprisingly cool.

MICHAEL LAX FOR COPCO

Lately, I've become interested in Michael Lax designed items produced by Copco. I found a Lax designed tea kettle a few weeks ago and just listed it in the shop.

I've found many other great Copco designs during my research and have fallen in love. Lax was born in 1929 and lived until 1999. He came to Copco because he was friends with Samuel Farber who founded the company. Lax designed enamel and cast iron kitchenware items throughout the 1960s.

There are Michael Lax and Copco items on Etsy and all over Ebay. And occasionally you will find them at thrift stores and at garage and estate sales.

WISH LIST :: KILIM RUGS

On my wish list right now is a kilim rug. But, wait, what is that? How is a kilim rug different than a "regular" rug. Well, dear readers, I am going to educate you...

A kilim rug is pileless and other rugs are piled which also makes them carpets. When making a kilim rug, the wefts and wraps are interwoven as in weaving on a loom. Other kinds of rugs use small pieces of knotted yarn. Think of it this way... latch hook rugs are piled rugs; the yarn is just giant compared to their fancier thinner-yarn using cousins. Get it now?

Most kilim rugs originated in the Middle East, such as Turkey and Iran. The word kilim comes from a Turkish word. These rugs can be used on the floor or hung on the wall as art. You can even find kilim throw pillows, place mats, etc.

I like them because they fit right in to a modern interior. Check out these examples:

Hello and welcome to my new blog! Many of you may know me from my previous blog, drew-o-rama. One thing led to another and before I knew it six months had passed and my old blog became, well, my old blog.

I waffled back and forth for a while about what to do and realized the best option, and the one I am most excited about, was to launch a new blog with a new focus. So, here I am!
